Kavita Ramdya’s “Bollywood Weddings” is a rewarding book, rich in insights into how cultures meet, mix, and merge in our era of airplanes and the Internet. It looks at a whole range of behaviors among U.S. Hindus, from dating to getting engaged to choosing the dress to getting married to the reception. And it makes a series of provocative observations about how this all works, not least how the various generations negotiate between “American” and “Indian” values. Oh, and the matchmaker here is the Bollywood film, which has just enough of both America and India in it to keep everyone at these weddings dancing.

Bollywood Weddings is one of those books that is hard to put down! With her lively and accessible prose, Kavita Ramdya has written a wonderful account of second-generation Indian-American lives and the sometimes joyous and sometimes vexed negotiations of identity and intimacy that run through them. I highly recommend this book to those who are interested in better understanding South Asian diasporas and global culture in the world today.
