I have used TaxCut every year since 1999. The 2009 H&R Block At Home Deluxe Federal edition is disappointing. For one, a lack of flexibility in entering information is built in, perhaps to encourage the user to pony up for the Premium edition; within the program, the user is invited to pay $30 on the spot to upgrade. This is outrageous. Either the program is adequate to cover a given situation or it is not. Given that the promotional material indicates that my situation is covered, then it should be completely covered, period. Forcing an override prevents e-filing. To file an extension requires the user to pay an extra $19.99 despite the fact that the promotional material states that 5 filings are free. The latter falls into the category of deceptive trade practice and should be investigated by the Attorneys General of all states in which the product is sold. A smaller issue is that after all of this time, the worksheets still are not properly configured for printing. This program is a poorly constructed commodity, not one that demonstrates consideration for the consumer.

This might work for you if your case is simple, but mine isn’t. This software had no idea how to deal with foreign earned income, and asked me to fill out the forms directly! why I am buying a tax software for then?! by the way, turbotax handles that case very well.
for those who mentioned issues with 64 bit: I’m on win7 Enterprise 64 bits, no problem with installation.

Does not work with Windows 7. I had to download XP emulator software to even run this - still can’t print for my records. H&R needs to step it up for 2010.

After determining that I needed the deluxe version, I went ahead and made the purchase not confirming that it had State on it. (I really don’t know why they wouldn’t include state, in Ca we’ve always had to file). I paid $24.99 thinking I got a deal. No deal…it was an additional $29.99 for the State download and then an additional $19.99 for e-file (which I have not paid since I have gone from getting a $600+ refund last year to having to pay $71.00 this year. Why should I pay to e-file when I’m not getting a refund….
I did not make this purchase from Amazon, but from Dell and I do admit I should have tripled checked to make sure what I needed was on there, as if it isn’t confusing enough. So I’m just putting my lesson out there…triple check your purchase.
And it could have gone over credits a little better. Check to make sure your new energy efficent windows and roof get credit, if it’s due.

Quick download version software for my 2009 tax return preparation. It saves the shipping and handling time and cost.
